Maps

These maps are some of my latest work. I love running around a mountain with a map in my hand, and painting them makes me think about the shape of the particular hills and valleys, and remember the times I have spent on them. This is a page I will keep adding to.

The Cuillin of Skye

Map · Isle of Skye

The traverse of Skye’s Black Cuillin is the major mountaineering expedition of the UK — and one I have yet to complete in full. These mountains have such a pull, the Red Cuillin adding to it, such a contrast to the sharp dark peaks of the ridge.

Kintail and Glen Affric

Map · Scottish Highlands

This map covers one of the best mountain areas in the Scottish Highlands, spanning from northern Knoydart, over Glen Shiel, Kintail and into Glen Affric. I have had some fine times running and biking over and around these hills, and it was good to get to know them again in a slightly different way through painting.

Lake District — central and south-western fells

Map · 2015 · Lake District

I painted this map as a prize for the 2015 GL3D mountain marathon. It’s my own interpretation of the area of map competitors used in the event.

Mont Blanc massif

Map · French Alps

This is the first map I painted. I was working on a book inspired by a run around the Tour du Mont Blanc, and wanted to illustrate the whole route with a map. This is the result — along with lots more ideas of which maps to paint next.
